Fitbit recalls 1.7 million smartwatches due to burns risk

Fitbit, which makes smart watches that measure, among other things, how many steps you take, is recalling 1.7 million smartwatches of the ‘Ionic’ type. According to the American company, there is a risk of burns for the users.

“The lithium-ion battery can overheat, causing burns,” said CPSC, the United States Agency for the Safety of Consumer Goods. That found 115 cases of overheating in the US. Some 78 Fitbit wearers complained of burns, two of whom had third-degree burns.

The agency advises users to stop wearing the watch and contact the manufacturer for a refund.

One million of those devices have been sold in the United States and nearly 700,000 elsewhere. The production of this smartwatch has been discontinued some time ago.
